Work out with other members of your household how
much money you pay out each week or month on your
basic living expenses. At this stage do not include any debts, arrears or any
credit payments.

Water Charges –
Water companies will usually accept weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments
Gas and Electricity –
Work out the cost of your bills over the year. Divide by 52 if you are doing a
weekly budget.
Housekeeping –
Include food, toiletries, cleaning stuff, sweets, cigarettes and a small
amount for entertainment and
other expenses e.g repairs, birthdays, Christmas, etc. A rough guide is:
Single person £30 - £50 per week
Couple £50 - £90 per week
Each Child (dependant on age) £25 - £35 per week
Non-dependant £25 - £35 per week
TV Licence –
You can arrange to pay monthly through the bank or weekly or monthly at the

Travelling expenses –
Include travel to work, school and for shopping. If you are running a car
include tax, insurance, breakdown cover, repairs, MOT and petrol.
School meals – If you get Income Support, income-based Job Seekers Allowance or maximum
Child Tax Credit but not Working Tax Credit, you are entitled to free school
meals.
Clothing and shoes – As a rough guide allow £5 - £10 for each person per week. Allow more if
anyone needs special or extra clothing.
